Old Metairie Library Is Recipient of Donation from
Friends of Hedberg Public Library, Janesville, Wisconsin

Friends of Hedberg Public Library Trustee Doris Roehl presents
donation to Jefferson Parish Library Director Lon Dickerson

On Wednesday, April 12, 2006, Jefferson Parish Library was presented with a $500 check for Old Metairie Library, Metairie, LA, from Friends of Hedberg Public Library (HPL) of Janesville, Wisconsin, southeast of Madison.

Doris Roehl, representing the Friends organization, hand delivered the donation to Jefferson Parish Library Director Lon Dickerson and indicated the money had been earmarked for use at Old Metairie Library, having been chosen by the group to be the adopted recipient of the Friends’ beneficence.

Mrs. Roehl, a Trustee of the Friends of HPL board, said that the money was raised through the Friends organization’s used book sales and the library’s Teen Board bake sales.

Mrs. Roehl was able to present the check personally because she had traveled to Metairie as part of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the not-for-profit global humanitarian aid organization of the United Methodist Church. The group of 18 who had traveled south from five churches in the south Wisconsin area was made up of volunteers, ranging in age from 14 to 71, who had come down to lend recovery assistance in the Metairie area for approximately a week.

Mrs. Roehl, proudly indicating that she and her husband were on the high end of the volunteers’ age range, took a break from assisting with the gutting of a Metairie home to come to Old Metairie Library with a couple of other volunteers to hand deliver the check on behalf of Friends of HPL.

In accepting the check, Dickerson indicated that though additional computers have been donated for Old Metairie Library and other Jefferson Parish Library locations, furniture was not, and that the money will be used toward the purchase of much needed desks and chairs for the computer stations.

The Friends of HPL was named the Outstanding Large Friends Group in the nation in 2004. As far a Jefferson Parish Library is concerned, Friends of HPL and the Teen Board are outstanding in 2006 in Old Metairie as well.
