3D Printing @ JPL

About 3D Printing & Scanning

Patrons can submit their own custom 3D model, choose a pre-designed model from a site such as Thingiverse, or create a 3D model using TinkerCAD. Model files must be submitted in stereolithography (STL), object (OBJ), Makerware (THING), or OpenSCAD (SCAD) format. Maximum model dimensions for 3D prints are 28cm x 26cm x 24cm. JPL  aims to complete any submitted model within two weeks; however, models that require the printing of many components or high patron demand may lengthen the overall process.

A surcharge will be applied to each printed model ($1.00 for plastic) in addition to the “per gram” cost, which is a charge for each gram of material used to build your 3D model ($0.05 for plastic). To submit a 3D print request, please fill out the form below. Be sure to read our 3D Printing Policy.

*Patrons can contact their local branch for questions about 3D printing:

Our (3D Printer) Digitizer has the capability to scan a 3D object and create a 3D model of the object for printing. Objects 8 in. x 8 in. in size or smaller can be scanned. Patrons wishing to use this service can make arrangements to send their object to WEBSITE or call 504-838-1144.

Some objects may not scan well, including those with shiny, reflective, or fuzzy surfaces. In addition, objects that are dark in color may not scan well. The Digitizer cannot scan surfaces on objects that are hidden from the scanner’s camera. Flat objects may also be difficult to scan. It is also important to note that the Digitizer does not capture the color of the scanned object.
